The telephone system is run by the state under the name of
Telefonica. Most Hotels, Bars and Restaurants, maintain on
their premises a telephone for individual public use. The charges
applied by these establishments are normally higher than the
applicable rate and sometimes can be excessive! There are
instructions available in the English language on how to use the
telephone in Spain and these can be heard by pressing the
Reverse charge calls are not allowed to be made from Call Boxes, nor
are they allowed to receive calls.
These can be attained from Tobacconists for use in Card operated
telephones. If using cash to make a call it is advisable to have a
number of small change coins available prior to using the phone.
International and national telephone calls are less expensive after
22.00 hrs during the week, and after 14.00 hrs on Saturdays, and all
during the whole of Sunday.
All Spanish numbers consist of nine digits and the first three
indicate the Area Code. In the case of the major cities and
Provinces the first two digits apply.
The International Code to call into Spain from any another country
use the digits “00344”
